Over 80 people attended a packed fringe meeting at Labour party conference on Sunday. The event was jointly Ken Livingstoneorganised by Unite Against Fascism and One Society Many Cultures.

Ken Livingstone, Labour’s candidate for Mayor of London in 2012, joined Diane Abbott MP, Margaret Hodge MP, Hugh Lanning of the PCS union, Steve Hart of Unite, Edie Friedman of the Jewish Council for Racial Equality and Dr. Dilder Choudry from the Muslim Council of Britain.

Ken told the meeting that the only way to undermine racism was to invest in housing and public services. He said we should stand with Muslim communities and celebrate the contribution of different cultures to Britain.

Margaret thanked the UAF for campaigning against the BNP in Barking, east London. She said that during the elections all the mainstream parties got it wrong on immigration. She added that cutting the number of migrants entering Britain was not the way to undermine racism.

Diane said one of the reasons she decided to join the Labour leadership race was to challenge the idea that immigrants were to blame for our economic problems.
